For 15 months, the cells of the Trigg County Jail have lodged no prisoners. The 2006 fiscal court voted to close the institution as a cost-savings measure. By transporting inmates to the Christian County Jail, current Judge/Executive Stan Humphries said that the county has saved about $40,000 in its first year without a detention facility.

“We looked at the 2005 and 2006 budget and this year’s which is about to end. We have some bills which have not been recorded, but in general terms, we are down from 2005-2006 by about $40,000,” said Humphries.

A large portion of the savings to the county comes from the reduction of Jailer/Transportation Officer Glenn Cunningham’s salary. In 2005-2006, he the county paid $61,483.80 for a full term as jailer. With the jail closing in 2006, Cunningham earned half that amount as he finished his term of office as jailer. In the first half of 2007, the county paid $17,548, in recognition of his new term of office, and reduced duties as transportation officer. For the 2007-2008 fiscal year, Cunningham will be paid $35,096, including a training benefit.
