Area children beat summer boredom thanks to the Janice Mason Art Museum’s Jumpin’ July art classes. The museum offered classes on painters and painting, jewelry making, weaving.

Teacher Sig Skundberg led a class of young artists through a class on making collages influenced by Pablo Picasso. “We’ve got some different colored paper to use as a background and add things to the top. The kids do all of their own creative work. Picasso is fun to do because nothing has to be exact. If the students want red water and green skies, it is ok. If they do something wrong, they can say they planned it that way, so nothing is wrong with it.”

Later in the afternoon, Skundberg said he planned to teach a class of older students about Picasso style self-portraits.

For collage materials, Skundberg said that the museum purchased colored paper and fabrics in bulk. For some extra variety, he provided an old hymnal, a travel guide and a copy of The Cadiz Record.

Student Emily Johnson said that she enjoyed using paper with a print that reminded her of snakeskin, and planned to use birth announcement photos. “I really don’t know what I am making. Maybe I’ll make a big leaf, but I need to do the stem.”

Her classmate, Benjamin Patterson said, “She’s making art.” When discussing his project, Benjamin said, “I’m going to make an orchestra.” He added that he plays several instruments, which influenced his art. Benjamin plays guitar, drums and piano.
