In all, the PDB received 44 bids for 17 different services and several alternates, to be performed if the budget permits.
Without the alternates, construction of the building will cost $9,276,940 using the lowest bid in each category. Administrative Office of the Courts Representative Vance Mitchell said that the building’s construction budget had been set by the AOC at $8.3 million.
“Everything was pretty close to what we expected except for the general trades,” said Mitchell. “We need to look again at our finances and see what we’ve got, and negotiate with some of the lowest bidders. We did save some on the land that can be applied to construction, and we had budgeted our bonds at six percent. Right now, interest rates are at four percent, which means we had lest bond cost. We could use some of that money for construction as well.”
CMW Architect Dennis Arthur who designed plans for the building said, “I’ve had no chance to decipher what’s what yet.”
Two companies bid on the general trade portion of the job. B.H. Green and son bid $3.838,649 while M.P. Lawson Construction bid $4,127,000.
Representatives from Codell, CMW and the AOC are reviewing the bids currently, and will present their recommendations of which contractor has made the best offer to the PDB at next week’s board meeting at 4:30 p.m. August 8, in the County Courthouse Annex basement.
Magistrate Jon Goodwin, a member of the PDB said, “I’m not surprised by the bid amounts. I think having a construction manager on board caused us to have enough competition that we received fair bids.”
