To get a SCAPP grant from the Kentucky Arts Council, communities must form a team with representatives from a school, the community, an arts organization and a parent. Two years ago, Portia Ezell, Trigg County Primary School Principal Ann Taylor, Martha Davis, Paul Fourshee and Melissa Higgins applied for and awarded with the grant. The result was last summer’s show, “Suessical: The Musical.” The SCAPP grant pays $1,500 the first year, which must be matched, up to $5,000 the second year and $1,500 the third year. The idea behind that is that by that time, the group should be self-sustaining. Ezell said they opted out of applying for the grant this year in part because they wouldn’t have received a very large amount and it was a big hassle to travel to Faubush for three years in a row, which teams are required to do. Also, teams must remain intact, but Higgins was moving away.
