The Trigg County Wildcat Boy’s soccer team lost the season opener at Fort Campbell 3-0 on Monday August 13 but the game was closer than the score leads on.

“We gave one away,” said a disappointed head coach Josh Nichols, “it was a game we could have competed well in or possibly won.”

The ball did not seem to bounce in the favor of Wildcats. A missed a penalty kick by Roman Cail and a miscommunication on defense sent the Wildcats into halftime down 1-0. As soon as the second half started everything seemed to unravel even more for Trigg County.

Five minutes into the second half, Wesley Croom was given a red card and ejected from the game after he pushed down an opposing player.

“I did not see it but from what I was told, it was a very controversial call,” said Nichols of the ejection.

To add to the bad karma, Ronnie Weeks scored an “own goal” while playing defense. It goes without saying it was unintentional yet unavoidable misshap. The ball bounced off of his leg while he was trying to get down field and helplessly rolled into the Cat’s goal.

Sophomore transfer Jeremy Stamps, the teams top forward, had several close shots but was sidelined with a concussion during the second half.

“Apparently he got the concussion early in the game and did not tell anyone,” said Nichols, “I saw him later on and he was just kind of staring off into space. Obviously we sat him down after that.”
