The season had a slow start with a 3-2 loss to Muhlenberg South. The Lady Cats came out flat and had 2 goals scored on them in the first 10 minutes. The second half however yielded better results as Laykn Brooks scored on a free kick in the 60th minute and Kelci Winn found the net off a Brooks assist. “The girls played well enough to win in the second half,” commented Coach Mike Smith, “but just came up short.”
A few days of practice and some adjustments in the line up by head coach Mike Smith were all that were needed. The Lady Cats haven’t had a loss since. The first team to fall was the Bravettes of Union County; the previous scrimmage a week earlier between the two teams ended in a tie. This time, Trigg won 5-0. Dori Sheehan had her first shutout in what was only her second start in goal. Danni Romero opened the scoring with a goal at point blank range after a dropped ball by the Union keeper. Laykn Brooks and Melanie Want ended the game with 2 goals each in what was a promising turnaround for the Lady Cats. Coach Smith felt like this game would be a good measure of the Lady Cats’ progress as the rosters remained the same, with the exception of a lost goalie, from the previous year, when Trigg and Union tied twice.
Todd County was next on the schedule and the momentum of the game at the Trigg County Recreational Complex was determined early when Brooks scored her record setting goal, before Mike Smith had time to get his stats sheet out, at 15 seconds into the game. Melanie Want knocked in a goal off a Taylor Davis corner kick. Followed by a goal from Amber Townsend, a senior forward playing her first year. Brooks finished up the scoring with a goal in the second half. Sheehan had her second shutout in goal and it was the first time the Lady Cats have had back-to-back shutouts in program history.
