Matt Ledford (standing) and Donnie Tyler take a moment to tell children about fire safety. One of the highlights of the day was the high pressure nozzle mounted on top of the Trigg-Lyon engine.
4H Program Director Janeen Tramble said that 175 students left the classroom for the morning to tour seven stations on the farm teaching safety. “We have an electrical safety station from Pennyrile Rural Electric, Bunge Grain is sponsoring a grain safety station this year. Officer Scott Brown from the Cadiz Police will teach bicycle safety and we are talking about power take-offs and farm equipment. Kids should not be passengers on tractors. Matt Ledford and Donnie Tyler are here teaching fire safety. Randy Wade of Trigg County Rescue is teaching about how they respond to chemical spills and to stay away from chemicals at home.”
Tramble added, “We have an ATV safety station because that is a big issue around here. Legally kids can’t ride an ATV larger than 90cc’s until they are 16. Some of them have broken the law by being a passenger on them.”
Don Dominigue brought a miniature corn auger to show the dangers of playing in a grain bin. As he asked students to place their hands in a small bin of corn, he switched it on. “This is grain engulfment. If a child is playing, and someone opens up the draw-off, they can literally be sucked down into the grain. If they are playing in a bridge, it can pull them down too.”
Student Gabby Lewis said that she liked the fire safety station best. “We learned about how the fire truck can help if you have a fire. They will come to your house and use their water hose to water it down.”
