Trigg County Fiscal Court members voted last Tuesday to ask the Montgomery Volunteer Fire Department to select land and solidify a lease for a proposed substation at the Recreation Complex.

Montgomery Chief Doug Latham said that his department wanted to lease a half-acre of land on the property to store a tank and pump truck. He said that with that amount of land, the department could expand the substation to accommodate a third truck.

Judge/Executive Stan Humphries said that the county planned to offer a 50-year lease for one dollar per year at a location on Complex property to be determined. “Think back to the summer with the dry weather. We feel like this would be of benefit to the county.”

Latham said that at the end of the leasing term, he would like to see a renewal clause, and a second stipulation declaring that upon unforeseen dissolution of the department, the land, and building would revert to the county. He added that the department would purchase the building, pay for electricity, insurance and provide upkeep.

Magistrate Doug Taylor asked if the substation would infringe on other districts.

“Not at all,” said Latham. “We’re close to other districts and could provide mutual aid. We have adequate membership to support the additional substation and would not be faced with a decreased rating. In fact, it would help lower the ISO (Insurance Service Office) ratings.”

The chief said that homes beyond a five-mile radius from a fire station or substation are considered to have no fire protection.

Magistrate Donnie Tyler, a member of the Trigg Lyon Volunteer Fire Department said, “I think it would be a good idea to have a department closer to that area.”

Taylor asked, “If we vote for this, are we prepared to set a precedent to help all of the other districts if they desire. It may be a good thing.”
