Mitchell was born in Indianapolis to parents Butch and Linda Mitchell. He has one brother, Curt who is a sophomore at Western Kentucky University, majoring in Civil Engineering. The Mitchell family moved to Cadiz when Tyler was in the 5th grade. You might say they are the first family of golf in Trigg County. Butch was once a scratch golfer and Curt was one of the better high school players in the region for years. Curt has five holes in ones on his resume. Linda rounds out the family foursome by being a golfer herself.
Tyler began playing Pepsi Tournament at age seven in Indiana and continued on that tour through age seventeen. Tyler was player of the year on the Pepsi Tour at age twelve. He won six of seven tournaments that year. He also won the Kentucky Jr. Amateur for his age group when he was thirteen and fourteen years of age. Then Tyler began moving to the national golf scene. He started playing on the AJGA or Amateur Junior Golf Association tour. Elite golfers from all over the world compete on the AJGA. This year Tyler was one of 156 golfers to qualify for the US Jr. Amateur. He advanced to the final 64 before being eliminated in match play by one of the tournament favorites, who was ranked 5th in the world. This action too place at the tough Boone Valley Country Club in St. Louis. (Mark McGuire and Joe Buck are members there)
