According to a press release from Kentucky Secretary of State Trey Grayson’s office, tens of thousands of students across the state will have the chance to participate in the Office of the Secretary of State’s 2007 Kentucky Student Mock Election, a partner election of the Youth Leadership Institute’s mock election. Trigg County schools are currently not involved, although that will change if Middle School Principal James Mangels has his way.

The elections are open to middle and high schools and will be on Nov. 1. The press release said this would mark the end of Civics Month in Kentucky and that the deadline to register is Oct. 28.

Mangels said that when he heard about it, he wanted the school to participate. He said, though, than when he asked a teacher to call about it, she was told that she had missed the deadline. After The Cadiz Record asked him about it, though, Mangels said he would still love to get the school involved if he can get what appeared to be a misunderstanding cleared up.

“I think it would be great,” Mangels said Monday afternoon. “What better way to teach our kids about democracy?”
