Trigg County Clerk Wanda Thomas faces several deadlines to prepare for the general election November 6.

“We have to inspect the voting equipment on October 23, the same day we have election school,” she said. “The last day to announce an official write in candidacy is October 26, at 4 p.m.”

Thomas said that to have votes recorded, a write-in candidate must demonstrate eligibility for the post, collect two signatures, complete paperwork and pay a $50 fee.

For residents registered in the county, but living in other areas temporarily, Thomas said that the deadline to request a mail-in paper ballot was October 30. Completed ballots must be received in her office no later than the end of the Election Day for votes to count.

Three candidates have filed as write-in candidates for seven positions as county constables. George Zering announced his candidacy in District One, George Colbert in District Three and Dennis Whitten in District Six.

The county jailer’s race features Republican Roger Knight, Democrat James Hughes and now write-in candidate Michael R. Calhoun. The other race of local interest features City Councilperson Donna McNichols unexpectedly defending her seat from challenger Regina Wilkerson-Jasper due to last summer’s de-annexation.
