The Sun’s report said that the increase to $115.14 for 10,000 cubic feet of gas from $107.27 ranks as the second lowest among Kentucky’s five gas distributors according to the Kentucky Public Service Commission.
The Sun said that PSC Chairman Mark David Goss noted an ample supply of gas and did not expect much fluctuation in costs during winter months.
The Sun said that wholesale costs account for 75 percent of a retail customer’s bill, and that Atmos reported a decline in costs for four months and a surplus exists in the national supply.
Atmos Spokesperson Kay Coomes told the Sun that rates for an average consumer should increase by $7 this year, and rates depend on the efficiency and habits of a customer as well as weather conditions.
Coomes told the Cadiz Record that Atmos’ efficiency with operations and storage of inexpensively purchased gas supplies kept the increase from growing even higher. “We do purchasing when gas is low and that helps offset some of the spikes. Of course you can only do so much buying and storing.”
