ASK Center helps ensure a happy Thanksgiving

As students were getting ready to go on their thanksgiving break last week, the A.S.K. Family Resource Youth Services Center was getting the last of their Thanksgiving baskets ready for local families in need.

The center serves many students at the middle and high schools and their families. Center Assistant Shonnon Matthews-White said that the agency puts together Thanksgiving baskets every year and that the families are chosen based on referrals. People will call and tell her about a family that use the help and she investigates to make sure they are legitimate, she said. Many of the people who ultimately get a basket would probably never ask for help, but they get it if the center finds that they are in need, she said. Most of the referrals come from students, she said. This year, a total of 24 familes were given baskets, she said. The 24 familes included 76 people.

The center depends on help from students and local businesses to reach their goal of helping as many families as possible, Matthews-White said. By Nov. 16, they were running a bit behind and had only five baskets completed. Fortunately, she received a call from Montgomery Elizabeth Baptist Church, whose members wanted to help. They gave her a list of families who needed help and also put together 11 baskets, as well as donating money for turkeys. Matthews-White said she was also very thankful for the help of Mark Blackburn at Goodwin Insurance. Three school organizations helped the center as well, including the Beta Club, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America and Students Against Destructive Decisions.
