Well cheer up Bunky, I got something for you. Basketball!
And boy oh boy does it have some great things going for it. Just the fact the game is indoors is a big plus. The restrooms are like a 5 star hotel compared to football and if that isn’t enough the food is prepared to perfection.
Are you picking up what I’m putting down? It’s a genuine event. Want more? The action is crazy wild. The coaching is intense. You got boys games. You got girls games. You got cheerleaders. The players and fans are way above average in looks and intelligence. It’s usually played during the week leaving your weekends open for Broadway plays and jaunts to Miami and Vegas.
What’s that you say? Am I overselling? I think not! Jump on the bus and ride along with me as I tag along with the Wildcats to Dawson Spring last week.
I was invited to ride along with the team and coaching staff on the luxurious Wildcat bus to Dawson Springs for Trigg’s first game of the season against the Panthers. Okay, I am overselling on the bus. I asked if this one was made for kindergarteners and was told, no, it’s a regular one. I had a whole seat to myself and my knees still went across the isle to the seat across from me.
The bus was expertly driven by Fred Wilson Jr. and that brought up a good story from years past. Coach Jim Wallace told of riding the team bus on narrow country roads with Millard Griffin at the helm. Millard, it seems, would clip a mail box or three every now and then. Upon arriving back home he would casually say “well Jim, we changed a few addresses tonight.”
This night, with Fred at the wheel, we safely arrived just as the hot dogs were coming off the grill and the aroma of fresh popcorn hung in the air. I had forgotten all about the cramped bus after my third ‘dog. And two bags of corn and three cokes.
