Trigg County High School junior Jonathan King has had a couple of busy summers in row, playing for the Kentucky Hoopstars under the direction of Eddie Ford, the father of University of Kentucky basketball legend Travis Ford. Now he’s weighing his options about which college to play for after graduating in 2009.

King said that in 2006, he played on the elite sophomore Kentucky Hoopstars team, and played on the elite junior team this year. Over the summer, he played games in Louisville, Nashville, Florida, Virginia and Arkansas. He said his experiences on those teams were a lot of fun and taught him a lot.

“You play some of the best competition in the nation,” he said.

When King wasn’t playing with Kentucky Hoopstars last summer, he was finding other ways to practice his skills. He took a trip up to Pennsylvania, where he attended a basketball camp at Lehigh University in Bethlehem and one in Pittsburgh’s Duquesne University.

King said he is now in talks with several colleges around the country about getting a basketball scholarship. He said that Western Kentucky University, Murray State University and Loyola University Chicago have expressed interest. Jonathan’s mother, Clarissa King, said those three schools have not yet visited to watch him play, but that he has talked to them about it. Jonathan said that Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio has also expressed interest in recruiting him.

King said that the college he has been talking with most has been Harvard University. He said that their scout came to see him play and that he has been in touch with him ever since. King said has built a good relationship with him and talks to him on the phone “every day.” King said he currently has a 3.8 grade point average, but the scout told him that the main trick to playing Harvard basketball is that “you have to be a hard worker.”

“Hopefully, I’ll decide by this time next year,” he said.
