The organization has been creating Christmas tree ornaments every year since 2000 to commemorate various historical buildings. Society member Barbara Shore said that the first ornament was the old Grinter house on Main Street, which is now occupied by Dan and Debbie Swartz. Shore said there was only one of those ornaments left.
This year’s ornament is the courthouse that was recently demolished. Shore said that while many of the ornaments in the past have commemorated buildings most people couldn’t remember, she hoped more people would buy this year’s because everyone remembers what the courthouse looked like.
Most of the ornaments made in the past are still available for purchase at Miss Malva’s Antiques and at Eldora’s Books, Etc. for $15 each, Shore said. The 2001 ornament of Cadiz Baptist Church and the 2003 ornament of the old Cadiz railroad train are no longer available, but there are about 25 of the old courthouse left. That courthouse was built in 1895 and burned down in 1920. It looks like the Justice Center that will begin construction in the same spot this year. The ornaments were made in 2002.
