The biggest and safest party ever for graduating seniors from Trigg County High School doesn’t come cheap. Organizers for Project Graduation spend their efforts across the year raising funds to make graduation night memorable and safe.

This year, Organizer Teresa Rexing said that the group is nearly halfway to its goal to prepare a Mardi Gras-themed party for graduates. Many of the details remain under wraps.

“We want kids to be surprised this year,” said Rexing. “We haven’t allowed them into our meetings. Even though it is a Mardi Gras theme, there will be no drinking or gambling. We’re going to have beads, food, entertainment and jazz music.

Though she did not mention the price of this year’s event, Rexing said, “We hate to lose sight of our purpose, to provide a safe night for graduates. It costs a lot, and we are not even halfway to what we made last year. The more money we raise, the more we can give back to children with gift cards and raffle prizes. We’ll make sure they have a fun night, but we want to have something extra for the kids.”

To finance the event, organizers plan to host a chili supper on January 18. Five dollars buys diners a bowl of homemade chili, a pimento cheese sandwich, brownies, and a choice of soft drink or beverage. Operating from the Trigg County Schools Cafeteria, takeouts will be distributed at 5 p.m. A sit down dinner is scheduled for 6 p.m. to be followed by a silent auction at 7.

“For people wanting to pick up their meals, they can stop in the school’s circular driveway on their way home for convenience. The chili is homemade, and you could say the pimento and cheese sandwiches are catered. Even the brownies are homemade,” said Rexing. “It’s a good bowl of chili and a good sandwich for the price. We think we’re going to have a great evening and a great auction.”
