I, your faithful photog and scribe, have been a very busy shutterbug this past week. I have been in the nexus of the high school sports. A point in time that occurs so very rarely that it isn’t spoken of in polite circles (and my gentile readers are all in polite circles). The nexus I speak of is when the big three collide. It’s not a big deal unless you are involved in all three. I’m talking football, basketball and baseball. The football team celebrated their great year with a banquet, basketball of course is in full swing and baseball is in the starting gates of training and fund raising; and all this as I train myself for “The Biggest Loser” although a new reality show has popped up that I can work on if my weight gain goes south, “Speeders”.

Let me begin with football. Head Coach Shannon Burcham and staff put together a great afternoon Sunday. It fired off with a dinner (or “catered affair” for you Seinfeld fans) followed by an awards presentation in the Little Theater. As promised when he accepted the job Coach Burcham kept his focus on team awards in lieu of individual awards. Over five thousand dollars worth of jackets, pants, backpacks and the like were distributed to the team. A player had to do 20 hours of community service to qualify for one, keep a grade point average of 2.0 for another, and so on. All the money to buy the cool stuff was raised by the GridIron Club and the Century Club. If you have a kid playing football you need to be in one or both of these clubs. Coach Coby Lewis assembled a fantastic DVD of the season’s highlights that was shown to officially end a great season.

The Trigg County Wildcats basketball team had a rough week. The crowd was sparse for what would have been a great game if the last period was only 7 minutes. Trigg fired out to a 17-10 first period lead. Lone Oak played the same slow methodical game from start to finish worked there selves right back into the game by halftime. A couple of untimely turnovers in the last minute by Trigg (and capitalized on by Lone Oak) ended the game with a 62-60 loss. Jonathon King led in points with 23, Shelton “Mookie” Burress had 18, Jalik Alexander 9 and Dustin White 8. On a positive note, the hot dogs were especially good. The secret is in the dog. The Band Boosters are using “Nathan’s Hot Dogs”. I knew it was something. Next home game is Saturday night where Trigg hosts Henderson County. It’ll also be the Wildcats homecoming so come early and stay late.
