Commission Chair Bob Brame reminded the board that as a specially called meeting, only those two items of business could be discussed at the meeting. He introduced Bob Grant of Pike Legal to represent Verizon Wireless to discuss the tower to be built at 3800 Old Hopkinsville Road. No residents attended the hearing.
Grant said that the tower, to be built by Verizon would be leased by a minimum of four service providers.
The Cadiz Record asked Grant why a provider would construct a tower in a part of the county already serviced, while other areas of the county, including the Downtown area and lake regions remain underserved.
“There are two reasons to build a tower. Some areas have no signal while others are heavily used. This situation is a bit of both,” said Grant. “We’re looking to expand coverage and take a load off of other sites. With other towers five-to-ten miles away, customers will enjoy a better signal with fewer dropped calls.
Grant added that Verizon is required through the terms of its license with the FCC to expand coverage and that the area near the lakes remained within the company’s building plan for the future.
“This tower will take a load off of other sites in the heavily traveled I-24 and Highway 68 corridors,” said Grant.
