Five women from the Little River Baptist Association made a trip to Frankfort on February 19 to tell state legislators to oppose a bill calling for a referendum on casino gambling in the state.

“We met as a part of WAGE, that is Women Against Gambling Expansion and had a rally,” said LRBA Secretary Shari Littlejohn. “The Kentucky Women’s Mission Union organized the event. We had approximately 200 men, women and children attend the event at the Capitol Rotunda in Frankfort. We wanted to let legislators know that there are women who oppose gambling.”

Amy King attended the event to represent Trigg County. She said, “Gambling has a negative effect on families. The American family is already messed up. The last thing we need is something else to tear it apart.”

King said that the rally listened to a variety of speakers opposed to casino gambling, including a college student who believed the initiative would encourage students to gamble away tuition and education-related monies. She said that another speaker discussed how gambling ruined her family life as her parents succumbed to addiction. A schoolteacher parodied a Dr. Seuss book to show the negative influence of gambling.

“The lady I liked best spoke about how she voted for (Governor Steve Beshear) but switched viewpoints because she is opposed to gambling. She felt she was misled. After she voted in the election, she realized the last things the state needs are casinos.”

“We’re against casinos because of the hurt they bring to families,” said Littlejohn. “It’s not worth what financial gain we would see if it is going to hurt people. Casinos are probably the only ones to get rich. Do you really believe the government is going to get rich too?”

King added, “We don’t see much of the money getting back to the state. The poor will get poorer while the rich get richer.”
