“It’s important to check blood pressure. Maintaining a healthy blood pressure can keep a person from having strokes or other cardiac issues,” said Myra Overby of the Health Express Service.
Overby added that a diabetes test is good for residents for early detection before the disease leads to complications such as poor circulation, loss of limb and podiatric disease, sores that won’t heal and blindness.
“We recommend that patients follow up with their doctors if we find a problem in our tests,” said Overby.
The Senior Center provided ample fingers to draw blood from, and arms for the traditional blood pressure check. Overby’s fellow health care technician Stephanie Duncan said that the Health Express normally tests between 20 and 50 patients per stop, and had seen 19 at the Senior Center already.
“Anyone is at risk for diabetes and high blood pressure,” said Overby. “Weight is a factor but it is not the only factor. Both conditions are hereditary. African Americans are at a higher risk for high blood pressure.”
