It seems like pro football’s season just ended and now we have the made for TV spectacle NFL draft with experts abounding like those oh so wonderful (insert sarcasm here) political TV analyst who try to tell us what the candidates are really think. (get out hip waders here). As expect the top portion of the draft went according to most of the “experts ideas” of course my question is why do these folks think that just because they are drafted so high they have to be guaranteed so much money. As much as I don’t like the NBA they do have the right idea with a rookie Salary structure and they also require every NBA rookie to attend a personal management course to understand what is expected of them on and off the field. Maybe its time for once that the NFL look at this and do something that they are not the trendsetter in. Over last 10 years the guaranteed money tossed around to the top 10 draft picks would probably equal the annual payroll of many NFL teams. Needless to say the NFL is “America’s Real National Past Time” and the League can afford to keep doing what they are doing for now. Maybe someday when I retire from the newspaper business I can become Roger Goodell’s successor in the NFL front office.

Now on to local matters it was brought to my attention that TCHS Athletic Director Doug Gloyd is stepping down from his position at the high school. Now the question is who will replace him and will they school board hire someone to replace him with a athletics management background or continue a hiring pattern in the schools athletic department of hiring for budget instead of hiring a quality candidate. I know this school system and many Kentucky school systems are strapped in the pocket book but a school athletic program needs a leader who can take the program to that next level. From the few months I have been here to observe things I think Mr. Gloyd has done well with what he had to work with but with his departure it should be a time for the school system to look at the High Schools athletic programs over all and evaluate the plan and work to make it a better program for all when the next Athletic Director step in and takes the reins of a Trigg County Athletic program with a storied history in many sports and tries to reestablish the Wildcat dominance in the Fifth District. If one wants to see what the “model” Athletic Director should be look at the former Marshall County AD Steve Woodward.
