Western Kentucky high school students displayed some of their finest and in cases, most outlandish creations as Trigg County High School hosted its first-ever engineering summit at Lake Barkley State Resort Park last Thursday.

Students from TCHS competed with North Madisonville, Marshall County, Graves County and Christian County High School students with CO2-powered dragsters, compressed air soda bottle rockets and in showcases exploring various skills and aspects of engineering.

Benson International Plant Manager Marvin Whitt served as a judge in the drag car event. “At scale speeds, these cars would run 190 miles-per-hour. That’s super fast.”

Grade 11 student Lev Lewis of Trigg County High School worked with Senior Joshua Cox on a project about video games. “Basically we looked at the evolution of games from the 1980’s until now. Old consoles had eight-bit CPU’s and went to 192 bits in just 20 years. We’re wondering what games will be like in another 20 years.”

Cox said that he hypothesizes a generation of customizable games. “Right now, games allow players to create their own players. With platforms like the Nintendo Wii, there is a virtual reality element letting players throw their bodies into the game. We think entire games will be customizable. It’s already starting with games like Guitar Hero.”

Lewis displayed several generations of video game consoles. “It’s amazing. We went from an Atari 2600 that had a switch that let users select black and white television displays, to the Wii that allows for hi-definition television. It’s just nuts.”

Senior Jennifer Johnson called the summit “a big success.” She said she enjoyed seeing showcases from other schools while entering her own display, using a program called Rivet Architecture 2008 to design homes and buildings.
