The Trigg County Fiscal Court’s bank account to build a new senior center received a boost in May with the award of a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant from the Kentucky Department of Local Development.

Judge/Executive Stan Humphries said that he received word from Commissioner Tony Wilder on May 2 about the grant. “Coupled with the $200,000 we received from Senator Winters, we have a total of $700,000, but we are a significant distance away from our building in the $1.4 million to $1.6 million range.”

Humphries called the block grant encouraging, and said, “This is the push we needed. There are different groups and organizations that may be willing to help us with the new building and lend support.” He said that he planned to discuss the need for additional funding at Monday’s fiscal court session.

“We hope to hold a meeting with the Senior Center Building Project Committee soon to allow us to work closer with the architect and cut the project down to what we need and what we can afford,” Humphries said. “That will give us a better understanding of the project and at that point, the Fiscal Court can determine how to fund the building.”

“All I know is that we have the $500,000 said Senior Center Director Carolyn Bland of Pennyrile Allied Community Services. “I was told that the next step would be an environmental study and we will have to have an ad in the paper. People will have 90 days to respond. I don’t know what will be next.”

“We’ve looked into possible funding mechanisms. Low interest rates make a bond issue possible, though given the amount needed sometimes bonds are not available. We may seek professional help on ways to secure financing for a senior building assuming we do not receive the full amount from our requests,” said Humphries.
