A Sunday night accident at the Devil’s Elbow Campground in the Land Between the Lakes left a Cadiz man injured after being run over by a pick-up truck.

A Kentucky State Police accident report identified the victim as 19-year-old Brian J. Mason. The report said that he rode on the back of a 1994 red Dodge pickup driven by 23-year-old Donavon Robinson, also of Cadiz. While sitting on a toolbox in the truck with another man, Mason apparently lost his balance, fell from the truck and was run over by the rear wheel.

Trigg County EMS transported Mason to the Lake Barkley Airport for transport to the Regional Medical Center in Madisonville by the Air Evac Lifeteam.

Trooper Richard Wright responded to the accident receiving assistance from the Trigg County Sheriff’s Office and Trigg County EMS. The driver Robinson received a citation for Failure to Maintain Insurance, according to the report. No other injuries were reported and no other citations were given.

Detective Sgt. Sam Steger of the KSP’s Post 1 in Mayfield said that a new seatbelt law requires all passengers in a vehicle, including in the bed of a pick up truck to wear seatbelts. “That in effect retracts the ability to ride in the back of a vehicle. Everyone has to be belted so that would be illegal, unless it is a farm truck registered specifically for agricultural use. Passenger vehicles of one ton or more designed to transport 11 or more passengers are also exempt.”

Steger warned other drivers and passengers to avoid riding in the backs of pick-up trucks and cargo areas of vehicles. “It’s unsafe and not recommended by the Kentucky State Police. It’s not a good idea. If they do this, we will stop them and cite them.”
