Are you ready for some football?

For anyone just tuning in I better repeat some of my qualifications as a sports journalist, or to take it one step further, a writer of any kind. In a nutshell, I have none. Nada, por mi amigos de Mexico.

I do have many years of experience behind a camera viewfinder, hence the name of this column (does that make me a columnist?). What you can expect to find here is a general idea of what I saw during a game or at least what I think I saw, and maybe some humorous things that happen along the way (and I know funny when I see it!). With that said…Are you ready for some football?

Friday last found your humble and out-of-shape photog on the sidelines of Perdue Field for a little pre-season scrimmage action with our 6A neighbor Marshall County. It looked like they brought hundreds men in their early twenties, but upon closer inspection, the count may not have been in the hundreds and they might have been a little younger, but they were big and there were lots of them.

All in all I thought Trigg looked pretty good, sorting out the defense and then having to adjust after starting quarterback Donald Bush was sidelined early with a mild ankle sprain. Junior Mitch Rogers came in and did a good job handling the ball.

I know scores aren’t put on the scoreboard but if they had, Trigg lost 3-1. To a 6A school. A 2A team is not supposed to beat a 6A team, period.

A truly bright spot was newcomer Shelton “Mookie” Burress. Mookie is a senior better known for his basketball skills here in Trigg County, having moved here last year a little too late for football.

Look for some big plays from him this season. He ran a long one into the end zone for Trigg’s lone TD. Every team needs a “Mookie”!
