The city council unanimously approved on second reading an ordinance that would increase the city’s insurance premium tax from 5 percent to 6 percent. However, as Trigg County increased its premium tax to 6 percent about a year ago, Cadiz residents won’t see a real increase, said Cadiz City Clerk Lisa Rogers.
The fee is imposed on all insurance companies that operate with Cadiz city limits or that issue insurance policies, except for life insurance polices, on Cadiz residents.
Cadiz Mayor Lyn Bailey said at the meeting that those helping out in the Western Kentucky area had positive things to say about Cadiz and Trigg County, which they said were two of the most organized local governments in the affected area.
The five city council members all thanked city and county employees for their hard work and for working overtime to help get the local area back in working order.
When he gave his monthly report, Cadiz Public Works Director Kerry Fowler said that cleanup efforts will probably take several weeks, and added that as of Tuesday, Feb. 3 he had already hired five temporary employees to help with cleanup efforts.
Although it did not act on it, the city council heard the first reading of an ordinance that would correct language in the business license ordinance.
The city council also approved monthly expenditures and heard reports from Cadiz Police Chief Hollis Alexander, Fowler and Cindy Sholar, director of Renaissance on Main.
