Originally slated to open in the middle of March, campgrounds at the Lake Barkley State Resort Park are now set to open back up on Friday, May 1. Those campgrounds, as well as other campgrounds and other park facilities were closed in the wake of the ice storm that hit western Kentucky in late January and early February.

Cleanup of the trails and golf courses are being bid out by the Department of Parks, while the Department of Transportation picked up the resort park on their road cleanup contract, which is handled by Bamaco, said John Jordan, park manager at Lake Barkley State Resort Park.

The snapped power poles fallen trees, branches and other debris have kept campgrounds and a few other facilities closed for a while, although the structures themselves are undamaged, and most everything else has been re-opened, said Jordan.

Of the roughly nine miles of hiking trails at the state resort park, about 3.75 miles are now open for hiking, said Jordan.

The campground has 78 sites with utility hookups, a dump station, and two central service buildings with showers and rest rooms, according to the Lake Barkley State Resort Park web site.
