After going 1-5 over Spring Break in Florida, Trigg County returned home focused in a 9-0 win over Murray.

The Wildcats (5-8) got off to a slow start before a seven-run fifth inning put the Tigers (7-6) away.

“It was tight in the first few innings until we started getting key hits,” Trigg head coach Jackie Sholar said. “Murray won the All A in their region Saturday, and they seemed a little tired. We came out more relaxed after being in Florida all last week. I think the guys were glad to be home.”

The victory was Trigg’s second of the season against Murray after an 8-4 win March 27.

Trigg led 2-0 after four innings and exploded for seven in the fifth.

Will Stagner threw a gem for the ‘Cats, recording a complete game and allowing only one hit.

Trigg opened 5th District play Tuesday against Lyon County (results unavailable at press time). Sholar said his players will continue to focus on the things that have made them successful early in the season.

“Our pitching is key,” Sholar said. “I didn’t throw Will much last week because I was saving him for this week. Shane [Banks] and Donald [Bush] threw a lot last week, and I’m trying to save them for the district games. After Lyon County beat us in the district tournament last year, I think the guys will be more focused against them and ready to play.”

Trigg hosts Caldwell County on Thursday, plays Friday at Crittenden County and Saturday against University Heights in Nashville before returning home next Tuesday to host Livingston Central.

FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. – Trigg went 1-5 at the Florida Beach Bash last week. Sholar said the team was happy to be home after spending Spring Break in Florida, adding the competition they faced will help down the road.

After splitting their first two last weekend, Trigg lost 11-0 to Warren Central, 11-5 to Monroe County, 4-3 to Campbellsville and 23-0 to a strong Niceville, Fla. team.

“Everybody was wore out,” Sholar said. “We faced some good teams. [Niceville] is by far the best team we’ve played in the three years I’ve been here. But our pitching was gone by the end of the week, and we were playing guys in different positions, but the kids played hard all week.”

Sholar said he hopes Trigg can duplicate the success it had the last time the team spent Spring Break at that event.

“We went down there two years ago and won one game, but we came back and played well the rest of the season,” Sholar said. “I told the team it could be the same way this season and not to get down. It can either help us or hurt us.”
