Trigg County entered this week at 8-9 overall and with a 2-0 mark in 5th District action.

After last Monday’s win over Murray, the Wildcats continued home action with a 5-2 win over Lyon County in the first district game of the season.

Trigg rode a solid pitching outing by Donald Bush, who threw a complete game, struck out six Lyons and allowed one walk.

The big hit of the game came in the sixth inning when, with the game tied at 2-2, Alex Sadler hit a three-run double to give Trigg a comfortable lead.

After that win, the ‘Cats survived a late-game scare in a 7-6 win over Caldwell County.

Trigg led 5-0 after the third inning, and Hunter Smillie kept the Tigers off the scoreboard through six innings. Then, Caldwell started a rally and posted six runs in the seventh. The ‘Cats, however, weren’t done. Shane Banks smacked an RBI single in the bottom of the inning for the win.

Banks also picked up the win on the mound, retiring the final two Caldwell batters in the seventh. Smillie struck out five and walked one.

Friday at Marion, Trigg played what coach Jackie Sholar called “our best game of the year” in a 9-2 win over Crittenden County.

“Crittenden County was a big win,” Sholar said. “They’re the defending district champions. They’ve got a good team, and that was probably the best we’ve played all year. The kids were really up for that game.”

Trigg never trailed, scoring runs in the first four innings and taking advantage of Banks’ complete game on the mound.

NASHVILLE – Last week’s action ended Saturday with an 8-2 loss to University Heights Academy at Greer Stadium, the home of the AAA Nashville Sounds.

“The kids were excited to play there,” Sholar said. “They looked at the walls there to see who all had played there, guys like Prince Fielder and Don Mattingly. They were proud to be on the same field.”

Sholar said the ‘Cats could have played better.

“We didn’t play bad, but it wasn’t our best game,” Sholar said. “A couple of errors really hurt us.”

Trigg was scheduled to host Livingston Central on Tuesday. Results were unavailable at press time.

The Wildcats host Todd County Central on Thursday, play at Lyon County on Friday, host Greenwood at 1 p.m. Saturday and play Monday at Fort Campbell.
