The Wildcats are 14-10 overall and 5-0 against district foes after a 7-5 victory Monday at Livingston Central.
“The conditions were messy, and we hadn’t played in a week,” Trigg head coach Jackie Sholar said of Monday’s game, the Wildcats’ first since a blowout of Fort Campbell last Monday. “I thought the kids might be a little flat coming out, but a win’s a win. We battled back. In year’s past, we might have lost that game.”
The Wildcats never trailed after scoring four runs in the top of the first, but the Cardinals kept it close with three of their own in the bottom of the frame. Livingston then matched Trigg’s single runs in the second and fifth but couldn’t come all the way back. The ‘Cats added an insurance run in the seventh.
Trigg’s 11 hits were matched by 11 walks, but the Wildcats left 15 runners on base.
Trigg missed games against Crittenden County and Heath due to rain. Those games had not been rescheduled at press time.
The win against Livingston sealed Trigg’s spot as the No. 1 seed in the district tournament and sets up a likely first-round matchup against Lyon County.
“Our goal was to get the No. 1 seed,” Sholar said. “But in the district tournament, anything can happen. We’ve had the top seed the last three years. We won it two years ago and got beat last year. It helps to be the top seed, but all the teams are pretty decent, so it’s going to be tough.”
Sholar said he’s pleased with the way his team is currently playing as the postseason approaches.
“We’re hitting the ball well, but we’re not getting the big hits when we need them right now,” Sholar said. “We’re leaving too many runners on base, but overall, I’m pretty pleased with the way we’re playing. I’m very happy with our pitching.”
The Wildcats were scheduled to host Christian County on Tuesday (results unavailable at press time). Trigg is set to play Thursday at Hopkins Central, Friday against Webster County, Saturday at Union County, Monday against Dawson Springs and Tuesday against Muhlenberg South.
