Cadiz Fire Department responded to a pair of unrelated fires over the weekend, chief Kerry Fowler said.

A fire at the new Trigg County Justice Center was first reported at approximately 7:30 a.m. Saturday.

“It was in a heating and air unit in the back stairwell,” Fowler said. “There was quite a bit of smoke in the building and damage to the heating and air unit.”

The fire likely started due to a malfunction within the unit, Fowler said.

“We first thought some materials stacked around it had gotten a little warm, but we believe it was a problem with the unit itself,” Fowler said.

Fowler said one truck and 15 firemen responded to the scene and were there for approximately 30 minutes.

Fowler was leaving the scene of another fire when he was called to the Justice Center.

A storage building owned by Browning McKinney of Hopkinsville was destroyed by fire Friday evening, Fowler said.

The building was located on Main Street in the east part of Cadiz near NAPA Auto Parts.

Fowler said that fire was still under investigation by the state fire marshal’s office Tuesday morning.
