A new cell phone tower for Verizon will be built on what is called the Lake Barkley site, the Cadiz-Trigg County Planning Commission unanimously decided when it met last Tuesday evening at Cadiz City Hall.

Present at the meeting was Todd Wetzel, an attorney for Verizon, who talked to the commission about the new tower, which had come before the group at its last meeting, when the group gave the tower tentative support.

Planning Commission Chairman Bob Brame said once complete, the tower will be located northeast of Lake Barkley on the Trigg County-Lyon County line, near Ky. 274 and Ky. 276, also known as Hurricane Road.

Brame also said he didn’t know when the tower will be complete, but added that another tower was complete three months after final approval by the planning commission, while another one was completed a year after approval.

Matt Ladd, who is on the planning commission, briefly removed himself as a commissioner and talked as an employee of the Trigg County School System about the need to demolish the abandoned house, next to the old bus garage, on 172 Main St., in the city’s historic district.

The commission unanimously agreed to grant the request to demolish the old house. Ladd said it has been condemned because it is unsafe and has many structural issues. He also said the City of Cadiz will demolish the building, and added that the property will remain in the historic district.

Travis Hamby, assistant superintendent of operations for Trigg County Schools, said the property in question is owned by Trigg County School System, and will continue to be owned by the school system after the building has been demolished.

The old bus garage is currently used for storage, and will continue to be used for that purpose, Hamby added.

In other commission business, Debbie Bridges of Funky Monkey, a new business on Main Street, presented a sign that met the requirements for the historic district, and the commission unanimously approved the sign.
