The newly renovated sidewalk behind Trigg County Middle School was officially re-dedicated Tuesday morning. The renovated sidewalk was part of the city’s Safe Routes to School’s project, for which the city received $246,000 from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

City and county officials, as well as school officials and students, were present for the

ribbon cutting, which took place at about 8:30 a.m., and after the ribbon cutting, said officials walked down the sidewalk, away from the school.

Johnson and Associates was the engineering firm behind the renovation, and John Oliphant was the general contractor on the project, said Cadiz Public Works Director Kerry Fowler.

Cadiz City Mayor Lyn Bailey, Fowler and Trigg County School Superintendent Tim McGinnis all talked about how important it was that students have a safe way to walk to and from the schools.

McGinnis joked that since the sidewalk was well-lit, they could start having school at night.

Both the Cadiz City Council and the Trigg County Board of Education officially approved the project at their respective meetings earlier this year.

At one school board meeting, Trigg County Schools Operations Manager Matt Ladd and Fowler told board members about the construction proposal, which called for a new sidewalk and a crosswalk at the middle school parking lot and the five-way stop on Lafayette Street.

Both Ladd and Fowler said that area of Lafayette Street is usually busy and can be dangerous to cross.
