HOPKINSVILLE – Trigg County’s volleyball team spent most of last week in Hopkinsville and came away with its first two victories of 2009.

After opening the week with an 0-2 (20-25, 13-25) loss against Livingston Central last Tuesday, the Lady Wildcats put one in the win column Thursday at Hopkinsville 2-1 (25-19, 17-25, 25-23). Then, they went 1-4 Saturday during the Western Kentucky Smackdown.

“I was excited for them,” Trigg head coach Kim Mangers said. “They were so happy to get a win.”

Trigg suffered 0-2 losses to Union County (21-25, 18-25) and Christian County (9-25, 12-25) and 1-2 defeats against Fort Campbell (18-25, 25-20, 19-25) and Muhlenberg County (17-25, 25-18, 12-15). However, the Lady ‘Cats avenged the Muhlenberg loss with a 2-0 win (25-17, 25-15) later in the day.

Mangers said the Christian County loss was tough for the Lady ‘Cats because they were playing against their former coach, Rick Erickson.

“That’s always hard on them,” Mangers said. “They get it in their head that they’re playing their old coach and just forget how to play.”

The win against Hopkinsville came with a little drama on the side. Team assistant Keisha Graves, sister of sophomore outside hitter Stephanie Graves, was in an automobile accident before the match. Mangers reports Keisha is fine, but Stephanie was a little shaken up during the match.

“They really wanted to go out and get the win for [Keisha],” Mangers said. “That was really important to them and for Stephanie.”

Hopkinsville middle hitter Tori Beth Nolen presented a challenge for the Lady ‘Cats, but Mangers said the team made adjustments to counter her effectiveness.

Trigg was scheduled to host Fort Campbell on Tuesday (results unavailable at press time). The Lady ‘Cats will host Russellville on Thursday before a weeklong break from games.
