Byers, Cunningham advance to state

RUSSELLVILLE – A pair of Trigg County runners qualified for Saturday’s 2A State Cross Country Championship with their performances at last weekend’s 1st Region Championship at Logan County High School.

Lynease Byers recorded Trigg’s top finish of the day, taking second in the girls race, while Romaine Cunningham finished fifth in the boys race. Both will compete for state titles Saturday at the Lexington Horse Park. The girls race will begin at 10:30 a.m. (CST) followed by the boys race at 11:15.

Byers finished with a time of 21 minutes, 23.77 seconds, about 25 seconds behind region winner Aleja Grant of Paducah Tilghman.

Also running for Trigg were Alex Olin (21st, 25:06.81) and Hannah Barnett (39th, 31:34.28).

Cunningham led the Wildcats with a time of 18:16.58, 43 seconds behind winner Jon Ashby of Webster County.

Other Trigg runners were Matt Savage (38th, 20:29.44), Garrett Brown (43rd, 21:02.60), Debo Mayes (48th, 21:54.33), Jakelze Martin (52nd, 22:36.70), J.B. Hendricks (53rd, 22:42.53) and Jake Mitchell (57th, 24:02.05).

The Wildcats finished seventh overall as a team.
