One local business and four residents were given awards at the 2009 annual Cadiz-Trigg County Chamber of Commerce dinner and meeting, held Thursday evening at the Lake Barkley State Resort Park Convention Center.

Fourshee Building Supply was given the Small Business of the Year Award. Brenda Southwick of Trigg County Schools said the business has been serving the area for 56 years.

Ann Taylor, principal of Trigg County Primary School, was given the Educator of the Year Award. Bruce Higbee of State Farm Insurance said she was worked in the school system since 1986.

Lorna Pavon was given the Citizen of the Year Award. Carmen Finley coordinator of Pennyrile Allied Community Services – Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (PACS-RSVP) in Trigg County said Pavon has been spent 10 years volunteering with PACS.

Finley said that even though Pavon isn’t a native to Trigg County, she has tried to make it flourish.

The Presidents Award was given to Doug and Cher Loose, the co-owners of Loose Treasures, one of the antique shops on Main Street in Cadiz. John Durden, who was president of the chamber before handing the gavel to Ricky Turner of Pennyrile Electric, said Loose Treasures is an important fixture in the community.

Turner, who took the gavel, will start his official duties on Friday, Jan. 1, and said he will do his best as the 2010 Chamber President to perform his duties by helping to grow the county.

Mark Menendez, a professional angler with the Bassmaster Elite Series, spoke after the awards were handed out. He shared several fishing stories witih chamber members, and recalled how a health scare, meningitis to be exact, helped him realize he needed to make his family his top priority, with fishing beneath that.

Menendez, who called himself an “exposure broker,” said a large part of his business is actually getting people’s various products out there and using them in his work so that other people will buy them.

Durden also announced that Teresa Allen, Bill Stevens and Sharon Butts will join the Chamber of Commerce board of directors this year.
