Of that number, $253,127 funded Kentucky Educational Excellence Scholarships (KEES) for 186 Trigg County students, $204,411 funded College Access Program (CAP) grants for 142 Trigg County students and $68,246 funded Kentucky Tuition Grants (KTG) for 31 Trigg County students, Westerman said.
Statewide, more than $183.6 million in Kentucky Lottery proceeds paid for more than 120,000 scholarships and grants awarded during the 2009 fiscal year, said Westerman, who added that the lottery has contributed more than $600 million for such grants and scholarships since 1998.
“The Kentucky Lottery plays a vital role in providing funding for direct benefits to students through Kentucky’s need-based grants and KEES scholarships,” said Edward J. Cunningham, executive director and chief executive officer of the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority and The Student Loan People.
KEES is a merit-based program, allowing any Kentucky high school student who attends a certified high school and achieves a 2.5 or higher Grade Point Average (GPA) to earn scholarships to help pay for higher education at any eligible Kentucky college or technical college.
CAP is a need-based grant program to provide access to Kentucky’s financially neediest students. KTG is a need-based grant program for students attending Kentucky’s independent institutions.
