Last Tuesday’s 57-48 win over Crittenden County cemented Trigg County’s position in the 5th District. The Wildcats will face Livingston Central in the semifinal round of the district tournament later this month in Marion, with the winner earning an automatic berth in the 2nd Region Tournament and a district championship showdown with the winner between the Rockets and top-seed Lyon County.

“We played defense on every possession and finally showed a little patience on offense,” TCHS head coach Mike Wright said of Trigg’s performance against Crittenden. “We played smart, and we also shot free throws well, which is something we haven’t done all year long.”

The Wildcats’ effort at the charity stripe made a big difference in a game where neither team shot particularly well from the field – Trigg finished shooting 35.6 percent from the field, a little better than the Rockets’ 34.7 percent.

However, the ‘Cats went 22-for-27 at the foul line. A large portion of that figure was earned by Jalik Alexander, who missed all five of his field goal attempts but hit 12 of 14 free throw attempts.

Jaylan Mount scored 14 points to lead Trigg. Javin Grubbs added 11 as the only other Wildcat in double figures.

Trigg used an 11-4 run to take a three-point lead at the end of the first quarter and survived a 6-0 Rocket spurt to cushion the gap by one at halftime. Crittenden led twice briefly in the third quarter, but Trigg’s 15-for-16 performance at the foul line in the fourth quarter made the difference.

The Wildcats were scheduled to play Friday at Fort Campbell and Monday against Stewart County, Tenn., but both games were missed due to weather. No new dates have been announced for either contest.

That leaves Trigg with over a week off before Saturday’s Homecoming girl-boy doubleheader against Logan County. The ‘Cats are also scheduled to play Tuesday at Dawson Springs.
