This year, the Trigg County 12u (ages 12 and under) baseball teams joined the Five Rivers League, a nine-team league also consisting of 12u teams from Lyon County, Dawson Springs and Crittenden County. Trigg County had two 12u baseball teams participate in the league.

This was the first time that Trigg County 12u teams had played in the Five Rivers League, and both teams made it to the championship. The Just your Style Cardinals, coached by Kevin Allen, went 11-1 and earned the No. 1 seed, and the Cerulean Masonic Lodge Pirates, coached by Jeff Broadbent, went 10-2 and earned the No. 3 seed. The league tournament was held Saturday in Marion.

After a 10-1 win Thursday against Dawson Springs, JYS Cardinals earned their way to the championship game with a 4-3 win over Crittenden County Myers.

JYS opened the game with Benson Stallons on the mound. After surviving a shaky first inning in the field, Trigg was behind 2-0 going into the bottom of the first inning. Trigg’s only run in the first inning was scored by Stallons, who hit a double down the first base line, then stole third and home.

The fourth inning brought on pitching changes for both teams, with the Cardinals’ Will Alexander replacing Benson Stallons (3 IP, 4K, 2BB, 2ER, 3 hits) on the mound.

In the bottom of the fourth, JYS mounted a two-out rally that put up three runs on two hits and a walk. Andy Terrell drove in two runs with a single that gave JYS the lead for good. Alexander faced only three batters in the fifth, all three strikeouts on 12 pitches.

With the game on the line, JYS took the field in the top of the sixth. Alexander walked the leadoff batter, who stole second. The second batter of the inning struck out, and the next batter hit a line shot to center field that scored one and closed the Cardinal lead to 4-3. Alexander (3IP, 6K, 1 BB, 1ER, 1 hit) struck out the next two batters on eight pitches to close the game and send JYS to the championship game.

Cerulean Masonic Lodge earned a 3-2 win Friday over Lyon County thanks to a game-winning double by Hayden Daniel (2-for-3, two RBIs). Justen Wease also had a double, an RBI and a run scored, and he and Daniel pitched well.

CML then topped Crittenden County Baker 8-2 on Saturday.

At the plate, Cerulean was paced by Daniel (2-for-3, double, four RBIs, and two runs scored), Brandon Schafer (3-for-3, double, two RBIs and a run scored), Luke Carneyhan (2-for-3, an RBI and two runs scored), Alex Wynne, (2-for-3 with a run scored), Jack Vinson (2-for-3 with a run scored) and Wease (one runscored). Wease and Daniel pitched well, holding a good Crittenden team to two runs.

Trigg’s Cardinals and Pirates squared off in the final game. With the temperature around 96 degrees and the heat index hovering around 105, Will Alexander (JYS) and Hayden Daniel (CML) took the mound for their respective teams.

Brandon Schafer and Clay Stevens each had hits for Cerulean. Justen Wease pitched the last two inning, allowing Just Your Style only one run.

Just Your Style came out hot at the plate and put up one run in the first, two in the second and three in the third. Brandon Wilson hit a two-run homer that cleared the left center field fence with plenty to spare.

The top of the fifth inning saw the Pirates put together a rally and get two runners in scoring position, only to have a runner thrown out stealing home on a wild pitch to end the inning. Wilson came on in relief to pitch the close the game our for the Cardinals.
