Jeff and Michelle Wix, relative newcomers to the Cadiz/Trigg County area, opened Pop’s Place after talking with locals and seeing a demand for a new coffee shop.
“We’ve been thinking about this for quite sometime,” Wix said. “We’ve been doing our due diligence by asking a lot of questions about what the tourists ask about when they come into the area.”
Wix said that for a lot of tourists, the number one question was, “Where can I get a cup of coffee and something to eat?” He also said that locals have told them that they’d like another restaurant in the area as well.
Currently, the restaurant serves coffee, pastries and sandwiches, and is open seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. “The people that we surveyed wanted a good, old-fashioned cup of coffee. They weren’t looking for a lot above and beyond that, maybe cream and sugar, and maybe a few flavors,” Wix said.
Wix also said there is free wi-fi access in the shop, and added that they have already employed three people so far. He added that creating a few jobs was also one of his goals.
Jeff Wix is originally from Nashville, Tenn., and his wife Michelle is from Louisville, and while she still works in Louisville, Wix said he is employed locally. They moved here in January and started planning a coffee shop in mid-February.
“We were looking at a place where we wanted to settle down long-term,” Wix said. “Cadiz and Trigg County, specifically, did all those things that we were looking for.”
Wix said he plans to install a telephone booth in what was going to be closet when a previous business occupied the building, and he also plans to install another table as well as a television.
A woman from Los Angeles, Calif., came in during the weekend, and when she heard the shop is going to have a telephone booth she said that L.A. needed them as well, said Wix, who added that he has already sold quite a few t-shirts, coffee mugs and travel mugs since he opened Friday morning.
