This and that

CORRECTIONS: As Christmas approaches I need to straighten up a few things here and there. First of all, thanks to all who responded to my sports examination. I need to correct a few mistakes and omissions. For one, the stat man for the 1970 basketball team was Hugh “Pee Wee” Roberts instead of Howard Roberts. As I came to find out, he also had some help in the form of Steve Darnell, Nathan Vinson and Kent Ivins. Let me note here that knowledgeable basketball student statisticians are nearly extinct in the present day. It has sort of become a lost art.

Also I had the softball slugger’s name wrong. It was Alan Vargo instead of Alan Fargo. I must have had a flashback to my days as a fan of professional wrestler Jackie FARGO. Professional wrestling, now that’s a subject that brings back plenty of memories from years gone by. A later column maybe.

KME CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT COMING SOON: For three days in the month of December, Wildcat Gym will be filled with basketball teams from across the Commonwealth. December 20, 21 and 22 marks the dates of the 3rd annual KME Christmas Classic. There will be five boys teams and five girls teams making up this years field. The boys teams will be Trigg, Dawson Springs, Reidland, Butler County and Stewart County, Tenn. The girls teams will be Trigg, Caldwell County, Lone Oak, Larue County and Allen County-Scottsville. You can buy a pass for the entire tournament or each day. It is a good three days of basketball with all games being played in the high school gym. Come out and support our local teams during the tournament.

HALL OF FAME ANNOUNCEMENT COMING SOON: After many meetings and much work, the Trigg County Athletic Hall of Fame committee is very near announcing its first class of inductees. Look for a press conference and press release in early January. Hall of Fame weekend will actually take place on Feb. 11 and 12. The inductees will be honored between the girls and boys basketball games with Caldwell on Feb. 10 and the banquet will be at 4 p.m. in the school cafeteria on the 11th. This should be a great weekend in the history of Trigg County Athletics.

DID YOU KNOW?: A question for all of the sports fans in Trigg County: Did you know that we have one of the greatest high school players in the history of the Commonwealth living in our midst? Out of the tens of thousands of players who have taken to the court from Pikeville to Paducah, we have one of the best ever living less than a mile from our gym. Next week, I hope to feature him in a special column. Got it figured out yet?
