Snow leads to slow start for Trigg County’s Biggest Loser

The first weigh-in for the third year of the local version of the Biggest Loser took place Monday at Trigg County Hospital, although it was hampered a bit by the snow.

Audra Hodges, director of public relations and marketing for Trigg County Hospital, said the first weigh-in had been scheduled from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., but because of the snow, it was cut off at noon and an alternate weigh-in will have to be held. At press time, a new weigh-in date had not been scheduled.

“The amount of people coming to weigh-in was pretty steady until the snow started coming down,” Hodges said, “And that’s a good thing, because we don’t want people on the roads right now.”

Last year, roughly 160 people participated in the program, and Hodges hopes that at least that many will compete this year. She added that it hasn’t changed very much from last year, and that the basic goal, to encourage people to lose weight and be healthy, has remains the same.

Hodges has said that the team with the largest percentage of weight lost will receive a trophy and “bragging rights,” while the individual that loses the greatest percentage of weight lost will receive a cash reward, as everyone who participated paid $10 to do so, and that money will go to the winner.

Lori Conger, dietician at the hospital, will host weight loss classes at the hospital, and now weight loss will be reported on the social networking website Facebook, as opposed to unofficial weigh-ins at the hospital, Hodges said.

The program will last for 12 weeks, and people will select their own teams of 3 – 6 people, including a team captain, said Hodges, adding that team captains are encouraged to report their teams’ weight loss via the local Biggest Loser Facebook group.

Conger said she hopes those that participated in the program will continue using the methods that helped them lose weight once the competition is over.

“We had some folks experience significant weight loss, though, so I call that a success,” Hodges said about the first and second years.

Those participating in the program are encouraged to combine outdoor and indoor physical activities to increase their personal fitness levels, Hodges said.

Participants don’t have to have a team prior to signing up, even though everyone in the program will be competing on a team, as program personnel and pair up individuals with others to form five-person teams, said Hodges.

The program is named after the hit reality television program that centers on overweight contestants attempting to lose weight to fight for a cash prize.
