City Council passes measure to help with potential FEMA application

A resolution that would help the city apply for assistance from FEMA was unanimously approved by the Cadiz City Council when it met last Tuesday evening.

The resolution calls for the city to adopt the Pennyrile Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan, already adopted by Caldwell, Christian, Crittenden, Hopkins, Livingston, Muhlenberg and Todd counties, and will allow the city to apply for any type of grants through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), said Cadiz City Clerk Lisa Rogers.

According to the resolution, the plan recommends a number of “hazard mitigation actions” to protect people and property affected by natural disasters. It also states that the Pennyrile Regional Hazard Mitigation Council is to provide annual progress reports to the mayor and the city council on how the implementation of the plan is going.

Rogers said that in the event of a natural disaster, those actions will be required if the city is to receive FEMA funding after such an event.

With virtually no discussion, the resolution was passed by a vote of 5–0, as City Councilor Susan Bryant was absent.

Additionally, the Trigg County 9-1-1 Communications Center continues to operate under an interim director after the departure of Trigg County 9-1-1 Director Kim Wiggins in January, said Cadiz Police Chief Hollis Alexander.

Responding to a question about a communications expenditure from the city council, Alexander said Stephanie Sauppe is continuing to serve as the interim director, and that there is no timetable for naming a permanent replacement.

In other business, Alexander talked about a police officer who is currently in week five of an 18-week training course at the police academy. Aaron Acree is doing well at the Kentucky Law Enforcment Training Academy in Richmond, and when he graduates, he will bring the police department back up to full force, said Alexander.

“The young man is enjoying it, and he’s real excited, so we’re excited for those next few weeks to get past, too,” Alexander said.

Sharon Butts, executive director of the Cadiz/Trigg County Economic Development Commission, wasn’t available to give her economic development report, but it was made available to the city council.

City Councilor Manuel Brown asked if the EDC’s efforts were having a noticeable effect on the local economy. Fellow City Councilor Todd King said it is a “slow process.”
