Low voter turnout expected locally for May primary

The May primary election is scheduled for Tuesday, May 17, although there are no local positions up for grabs this year.

Trigg County Clerk Wanda Thomas predicted a low turnout for this election, as it is an off-year primary election. She added that she hasn’t seen any campaign signs on any yards, even as the election is a month and a half away.

There were 10,093 registered voters in Trigg County at the time of the 2010 general election, held on Tuesday, Nov. 2, and as of Tuesday, March 1, there were 10,217 registered voters in the county, said Thomas.

Democratic voters will be able to vote for candidate for the positions of Secretary of State, State Treasurer and Commissioner of Agriculture. Alison Lunderan Grimes and Elaine N. Walker are vying to the Democratic candidate for Secretary of State in November. Competing to be the Democratic candidate for State Treasurer are Steve Hamrick and L. J. “Todd” Hollenbach.

And vying to be the Democratic candidate for Commissioner of Agriculture are Robert “Bob” Farmer, Stewart Gritton, John Faris Lackey, David Williams and B. D. Wilson.

Republican voters will be able to vote for candidates for the positions of Governor and Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Auditor of Public Accounts and Commissioner of Agriculture.

Vying to run as the Republican candidate for Governor and Lieutenant Governor in November are Barbara “Bobbie “ Holsclaw and Bill Vermillion Jr., Phil Moffett and Mike Harmon, and David L. Williams and Richie Farmer.

Bill Johnson and Hilda Legg are running to be the Republican candidate for Secretary of State. John T. Kemper III and Addia Kathryn Wuchner are running to be the Republican candidate for Auditor of Public Accounts. And James R. Comer and Rob Rothenburger are competing to be the Republican candidate for Commissioner of Agriculture.
