Funeral services for James Monroe Gardner, Jr., 75, of Cadiz, were held Saturday, April 9, 2011 with full military honors. The Rev. Kevin Roberts officiated. Burial followed at East End Cemetery in Cadiz. Goodwin Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Gardner died of natural causes at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at his residence.

He was born February 4, 1936 in Trigg County to the late James Monroe and Allie Atwood Gardner.

He was a retired farmer, a United States Navy veteran, a member of the National Rifle Association and American Hunter. Mr. Gardner was also of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by one brother, William Gardner; and one sister, Lucille Thomas.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Boyd Gardner of Cadiz; two sisters, Mary Brandt of Hopkinsville and Sue Hayes of Hoffman Estates, Ill.; two sons, James Gant Gardner (and wife Beverly) of Cadiz and Stacy Todd Gardner of Charlotte, N.C.; two grandsons, James Mathew Gardner and Christian Cole Gardner both of Cadiz; one niece, Brenda Southwick of Cadiz; and one nephew Steve Oakley of Cadiz.

Pallbearers were Matt and Cole Gardner, Ernie Baker, Mike Morton, Greg Leneave, Todd King, John Lewis Robertson, Ben Cundiff and John Taylor. Honorary pallbearers were Edd Boyd, George Southwick, Billy Redd, Robert Earl Fowler, Alfred Cossey, Rastus Robertson, Steve Oakley, Herb Brandt and Gwindal Martin.
