Six students from Trigg County Middle School and Trigg County High School took part in the Special Olympics Area 1 Track and Field Competition, held on Saturday, April 16, at Murray State University.

Dylan Hancock from the high school won first place in the 25-meter wheelchair event and the beanbag throw. Linda Spann from the high school won third place in the 50- and 100-meter dashes. Shane Edmonson from the high school won second place in the 100-meter walk and the 50-meter dash.

Maurice Catlett from the middle school won first place in the 100-meter dash and second place in the shot put. James Garvin of the middle school won second place in the 50-meter dash and fourth place in the softball throw. James Jones of the middle school won fourth place in the shot put and fifth place in the 100-meter dash.

The team is coached by Theresa Wilson and Lucinda Barnett and helped by Michelle Wease. The team will go to the state tournament in Richmond, Ky., on June 2 and 3, the first time they’ve went in six years.

Sumner, a junior at Trigg County High School, doesn’t get any extra credit or a grade for helping the local Special Olympic athletes, He says he just gets satisfaction from helping them out.
