Chapter 1730 of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) met on Wednesday, May 11, at the Cadiz Senior Center. This was the chapter’s last meeting before summer recess.

President Gloria Frenette conducted the meeting. Chapter Chaplain Clyde Weaver gave the invocation followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Miss Frenette welcomed First District Vice President Joseph Horcher.

Horcher spoke about NARFE’s campaign to rally lawmakers to preserve the benefits of federal employees. Horcher also spoke of the 2012 Federation Convention to be held in the local area. Two locations are presently under consideration.

The guest speaker was Mrs. Norma Campbell who is the Leader Dogs Kentucky State Chairperson. Three Lyons Club members in the Detroit area who saw the need for such a program, founded the Leader Dog Program in 1939.

A facility for raising and training leader dogs was built in Rochester, Michigan where it has remained to this day. The dogs receive intensive training. Individuals who are chosen to receive a leader dog, also undergo a month of training.

This is an opportunity for dog and new owner to become acquainted with each other and to determine if they are compatible. On the average a leader dog serves its master for about l0 years. There is no cost to the handicapped individual receiving a leader dog.

Lyons Clubs nationwide and private donations pay for all the expenses. The greatest reward for the leader dog program is that it makes it possible for a handicapped individual to be able to enjoy a more independent life. For more information about the Leader Dogs Program, please contact Mrs. Norma Campbell at 270-924-3342 or ncampbell2006@bellsouth.net.

Chapter 1730 will resume their regular meetings on the second Wednesday of each month at the Cadiz Senior Center. The next meeting will be Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 10 a.m. All current and former federal employees are invited to attend.

For more information, please call Daniel Bruzewski, secretary at 270-924-9520.
