Wildcats second at Murray, fourth at Madisonville to open season

Trigg County’s golf team opened its 2011 season with two strong performances last week.

Saturday, the boys team tied for fourth out of 11 teams at the Madisonville-North Hopkins Invitational, shooting a team score of 332. The host Maroons won with a score of 325.

The Wildcats were led by Nick Choate and Cole Gardner, both shooting 18-hole scores of 79. Austin Apsley shot an 85, followed by Kullen Garner’s 89 and Carter Sholar’s 95.

Thursday, Trigg’s teams played against Murray, Marshall County and Calloway County at Miller Memorial Golf Course in Murray.

Trigg’s boys team finished second with a score of 168, two strokes behind the host Tigers. Choate tied for medalist honors, leading Trigg with a nine-hole round of 36. Gardner and Apsley each shot 43, while Garner shot 46 and Sholar 48.

The event featured 17 girls golfers, two from Trigg. Madison Chaney shot 41 and finished third overall, while Sierra Bush finished eighth with a round of 47.

Trigg was set to play Tuesday in Calvert City (results unavailable at press time) before playing Wednesday at Boots Randolph Golf Course and Monday at Princeton Country Club.
