PRINCETON – Trigg County lost two regular season games against Caldwell County but broke through against the Tigers in Thursday’s 5-3 victory in the 4th District Tournament Championship.

Thursday’s match marked the fourth consecutive season that the Wildcats and Tigers met in the district final and the second straight win for the ‘Cats.

Trigg dominated play through the first 20-plus minutes but didn’t put a goal on the board until Blaine Alexander earned and converted a penalty kick in the 24th minute. Caldwell’s Ian Brown tied the game three minutes later, but Trigg regained the lead another three minutes later when Alexander fed Romaine Cunningham for a breakaway score. They repeated that connection in the 38th minute, and Caldwell cut the gap to 3-2 in stoppage time on a goal by Zach Adams.

Four minutes into the second half, Cunningham completed his hat trick on a goal assisted by Ben Wigand, and Alexander put the ‘Cats ahead 5-2 in the 49th minute. Jonathan Martin scored on a penalty kick for the Tigers in the 54th minute, but Caldwell got no closer.
